Sunday Night Catch-up.

Posted in Blog with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 3, 2013 by sethkoberg

Last post, I told you about this list of projects I’d like to finish by the end of this year. Here is an almost complete list of those projects, in random order:

  • Entertainment center
  • Shelving unit
  • Brick patio
  • Indoor Seed starter system
  • Green house/raised planter
  • Caj├│n
  • Pong-sat
  • Dice portrait
  • Juggling music video
  • Photo shoot

This list isn’t complete, but it is a start.

Another thing I need to work on is regularly updating this blog. I’m going to try and post an update at least once a week, on Sunday, updating what I’ve accomplished in the past week and what I plan on accomplishing in the up coming week.

New Year, New Stuff.

Well, 2011 is over. It was a wild ride but it was well worth it.

As usual, its been a while since I’ve updated my blog but now I have a project in the works which has been on my mind for some time now. I’ve had this idea for a long time, at least two years, and I’m finally getting everything together to get it done.

The final product is going to be a mosaic, roughly 8′ x 4.5′, made out of beer bottle caps. The biggest hurdle I’ve faced up until now, aside from the obvious need for thousands of bottle caps, was an image to use as a basis for the image. Well, I’ve got an image now. I’ve had the image for a while, but up until recently, I haven’t thought of using for this project.

Using The GIMP and Inkscape, two open source and free graphics programs, I’ve taken the image and created a mock up of the final product.

I find it interesting that I’ll be using this image because of the subject matter and the medium being used. A young woman sitting on the side of the street, smoking, playing on her phone, made out of beer bottle caps.

Anyway, below is the mock up with a link to my flickr site where you can view a larger version.

Last week, Gizmodo.com ran a photography contest called “1/1000.” You can read about it on their website, here, or in my blog post below. I’ve uploaded some extra shots to my flickr account.

Since these were taken for the 1/1000 contest at gizmodo, I set my Canon 60D to shutter priority, and adjusted the aperture and ISO settings to get a good exposure.

All post processing was done with the GIMP in Ubuntu 10.04.

Photo Contest

Recently, maybe today, Gizmodo announced their newest weekly photography contest.

The rules are simple: Your shutter speed must be set at 1/1000. Thats it. Any camera, any lens, any F-stop, any focal length, any subject. As long as the shutter speed is set to 1/1000th of a second.

I have to enter.

After leaving work today, I rode my bike to the local skate park to snap some shots. Chatted with a couple of the skaters and reminisced about days gone by where I would have been the one planting my face into the concrete.

I got some great shots of guys catching air on the quarter pipe and in the pool they have at the park.

Even though I think I have the shot I want to enter into the contest, I may go back a few more times to get some backup ones.

Possum Kingdom

Heres another image from my first few days of owning my new camera.

The skeleton was found at my families property, which is about an hour south west of our home, in the country. A quick google search tells us that it is most likely from a Possum. The fur collar around the neck area seems to be from a deer or some other furry country creature, which we found near the skeleton.

Again, if you look at the full size image, you’ll see some harsh grain in the out of focus areas, cause by a high ISO setting.

This image was also shot using the Cinemastyle picture profile on the Canon 60D, then post processed using GIMP in Ubuntu 10.4.

New Toy

Here is the first image I’ve shot, edited, and uploaded w/ my new camera, the Canon 60D. The graininess was caused due to a high ISO setting, which I neglected to lower since I’m still getting used to the digital SLR workings, and quite frankly didn’t notice

I have a few years formal education in photography, but that was using old school 35mm film, which doesn’t let you change ISO since that is set by the film and not a camera setting.

I guess this is just one of those things you get used to working w/ when dealing with new hardware.

The photo was shot with Technicolor’s new Cinestyle picture style uploaded to the 60D, which produces a flat image. Once uploaded to your computer, you can adjust the color by manipulating the Curves, Levels, Saturation, etc.

Image post-processing was done using GIMP on Ubuntu 10.4.

Let the blogging begin

Blog #1. Here we go.

Hopefully, this site will be a cluster-fuck of all my creative endeavors. Spanning multiple disciplines, from photography to electronics, and everywhere in between. I hope to demonstrate my skills, talents, and ideas, but most importantly, string you along for the ride and hopefully teach you something along the way.

Let the party begin…
