New Year, New Stuff.

Well, 2011 is over. It was a wild ride but it was well worth it.

As usual, its been a while since I’ve updated my blog but now I have a project in the works which has been on my mind for some time now. I’ve had this idea for a long time, at least two years, and I’m finally getting everything together to get it done.

The final product is going to be a mosaic, roughly 8′ x 4.5′, made out of beer bottle caps. The biggest hurdle I’ve faced up until now, aside from the obvious need for thousands of bottle caps, was an image to use as a basis for the image. Well, I’ve got an image now. I’ve had the image for a while, but up until recently, I haven’t thought of using for this project.

Using The GIMP and Inkscape, two open source and free graphics programs, I’ve taken the image and created a mock up of the final product.

I find it interesting that I’ll be using this image because of the subject matter and the medium being used. A young woman sitting on the side of the street, smoking, playing on her phone, made out of beer bottle caps.

Anyway, below is the mock up with a link to my flickr site where you can view a larger version.

Rolling Thunder 2

So, I had 400+ images to go through last night after the trip to Washington DC. Took a few hours to go through them all, select my favorites, color correct, and upload them to flickr.

This morning, I uploaded 10 of the photos to CNNs iReport section just to share the love with a news agency. Around 12 this afternoon, I got an email from a producer at CNN who wanted to ask me a few questions and use my photos.

I thought it was pretty cool.

Rolling Thunder

Just got back from rolling thunder, and my feet hurt!

Lots of walking, not wearing walking shoes, but vibram 5 fingers. They’re nice for light walking, I guess, or maybe walking on dirt trails through the forest, but walking on pavement and concrete for a few hours is not nice to your feet.

I took lots of pictures that I’ll post to my flickr stream later this evening, but before I do that, I MUST go get a pedicure. I need to give my feet some lovin’.

Also, I tried taking pictures for Gizmodo’s current photography challenge, 1 second, but none of the shots I got were decent enough. One of the main problems was that I didn’t have a tripod with me. Another issue is that the aperture on my kit lens doesn’t close down enough, so a lot of the photos were washed out.

My fiance came up with a simple work around, which was to buy some cheap sunglasses and put those in front of the lens. It helped a great deal, but I think the main downfall of this photographic project was not having a tripod.

I need to get me one of those.
