Work to be done

Posted in Blog with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 30, 2013 by sethkoberg

Well, as it seems, I have a tendency to neglect my blog and post only once every few months; however, I am hoping to change that.

I have decided to christen 2013 as “the year of production.”

Being someone that makes a habit of inadvertently creating virtual lists of things I need or want, I am attempting to have this year be the year most, if not all, of those things gets finished. This list consists of projects that I have assigned to myself for the sole purpose of being able to say, “look at what I have made! Bask in all its glory!”

These projects range from wood working to electronics, gardening to photography, and almost every craft or hobby in between.

A lot of these projects could be finished simply by throwing money at them. For instance, one thing my husband and I need is a new entertainment center, but going out to the big box store and buying one would defeat the purpose of getting my hands dirty and actually creating something.

Like Nikola Tesla said, “I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success.”

Now, it is time for me to get to work.

The Paper

Recently, we had a representative from the Loudoun Lantern, which is the NVCC Loudoun campus news paper, visit us in class trying to recruit new members for the periodical. Since the class is an English class, most of the discussion was directed towards writers, but they were in need of photographers.

So, to make a long story short, I’m an official photographer for the Loudoun Lantern. How exciting!

I’ve got my first assignment, which is to photograph author Mischa Merz during her visit for the Fall For The Book festival here in the DC/Metro area.

First order of business: Let the organizer and Ms. Merz know that I’m a glutton for taking shots, and I will be constantly snapping photos during her reading.

Just a heads up.

Update

Well, It’s been a while since I’ve updated this ‘blog,’ and I figure now is a good a time as any.

A few things have been going on in my absence, I got laid off work, my GPA in school jumped up quite a bit, and I’m heading to San Francisco in a little over a week.

Being unemployed is rather bitter-sweet. I have more time to do things that I enjoy; riding my bike, photographing things, general artsy-fartsy type stuff, but at the same time, their is no monetary income. Well, that’s not 100% true, I’m still ’employed’ until the 24th, so I’m getting paid through then, but after that, I’m getting nothing.

School has been moving along rather nicely I’d say. This is the second time ’round I’ve been enrolled at the school I’m attending. The first of which I did terribly. Maybe I wasn’t ready for the college thing, maybe not. Either way, my GPA was a little above a 1.0. This time around, though, I’m doing much better, and today I got the letter telling me that my previous attempt has been stricken from the record, so my cumulative GPA is a 3.318. Markedly better I’d say.

I don’t have much to say about my San Fran. trip though, other than HOLY SHIT I’M GOING TO SAN FRAN-FUCKING-CISCO! Vising my sister to be exact. Not sure what to do while I’m their, except going to see the Gay Pride Parade, but I want to do as much as possible.

Vacation

Last night, my fiance and I returned home from a 5 day long vacation.

We visited family in Louisiana, where my soon-to-be sister-in-law graduated from College.

We flew into New Orleans (which is pronounced or-lins, not or-leans, damn it!), and we knew we made it to the dirty south when we went to go pick up our rental car.

My fiance had gone into the rental office to pick up our car, while I waited outside with our luggage and had a smoke. Not 10 seconds into being outside by myself, some gang-banger-thug-wannabe walked outside, stood right next to our luggage and started checking things out.

Having lived in Louisiana for 6 years, I’ve learned to pick up on subtle characteristics of those who are planning on doing no good, so don’t try to say I was being paranoid…

While this little shit was scoping out his potential pay-day free-for-all, I decided to toss my cigarette out, and let him know I wasn’t stupid. I sat down on the luggage and started opening and closing zippers as if I was looking for something, informing him that this was my/our shit, and he needs to take a step back.

Realizing I wasn’t an easy target, he waddled back inside.

A few minutes later, the fiance came back out w/ the keys to the car.

I asked him if he noticed the little bastard and what, if anything, he was doing inside.

Not a damn thing. Apparently, this young man was just standing around looking at every piece of luggage that came and went through the sliding doors.

Sad really.

On a not-so-frustrating note, I took TONS of pictures while visiting, most of which are portraits, that I need to do some post work to. Once those are done, I’ll put some of them on the intarwebz.

Let the blogging begin

Blog #1. Here we go.

Hopefully, this site will be a cluster-fuck of all my creative endeavors. Spanning multiple disciplines, from photography to electronics, and everywhere in between. I hope to demonstrate my skills, talents, and ideas, but most importantly, string you along for the ride and hopefully teach you something along the way.

Let the party begin…
