Almost a year

Posted in Blog with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 18, 2014 by sethkoberg

It’s been almost a full year since my last post and I can’t say I’m surprised.

2013 was the year of ideas. Most of which were never touched, some were started and left to sit, and only one I can think of that was actually finished – an entertainment center for our new T.V – something that had to be completed in order for us to enjoy our new investment.

This year, however, is going to be the year of creation. I know it has been said before, even in this blog, but I’ve made a deal with The Husband that I can not purchase any more camera related equipment until I finish my list of to-do’s. That being said, I’ve run head first into my first project of the year; something that I had started years ago which has been itching to get finished.

Sunday Night Catch-up.

Last post, I told you about this list of projects I’d like to finish by the end of this year. Here is an almost complete list of those projects, in random order:

  • Entertainment center
  • Shelving unit
  • Brick patio
  • Indoor Seed starter system
  • Green house/raised planter
  • Cajón
  • Pong-sat
  • Dice portrait
  • Juggling music video
  • Photo shoot

This list isn’t complete, but it is a start.

Another thing I need to work on is regularly updating this blog. I’m going to try and post an update at least once a week, on Sunday, updating what I’ve accomplished in the past week and what I plan on accomplishing in the up coming week.

Work to be done

Posted in Blog with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 30, 2013 by sethkoberg

Well, as it seems, I have a tendency to neglect my blog and post only once every few months; however, I am hoping to change that.

I have decided to christen 2013 as “the year of production.”

Being someone that makes a habit of inadvertently creating virtual lists of things I need or want, I am attempting to have this year be the year most, if not all, of those things gets finished. This list consists of projects that I have assigned to myself for the sole purpose of being able to say, “look at what I have made! Bask in all its glory!”

These projects range from wood working to electronics, gardening to photography, and almost every craft or hobby in between.

A lot of these projects could be finished simply by throwing money at them. For instance, one thing my husband and I need is a new entertainment center, but going out to the big box store and buying one would defeat the purpose of getting my hands dirty and actually creating something.

Like Nikola Tesla said, “I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success.”

Now, it is time for me to get to work.

Finally finishing, or, rather, mostly finishing a project, I figured it would be a good time as any to update my almost forgotten blog.

My firefly project, for my sisters wedding, has been completed as far as the technical portion goes.  All that is left is to put the board and dangling LED’s into a pretty container and dress it up to make it look good.

Getting this thing to work took a long time to figure out.  It goes without saying that I also got a lot of help online from the Adafruit forums.  Without the help from those kind people, I would have been dead in the water.

The wedding is this Saturday, and I will take some photos and some video of the finished product to post so I can show off my labor of love.

One other thing I’d like to add to the project is an LDR, or Light Dependent Resistor, more commonly known as a light detector, so the LED’s will begin flashing after the sun sets.  Once I get this put on and added to to the code, I think I’ll stuff the birds nest of wires into some paper lanterns and hang them up around town, guerrilla style.

In an attempt to keep things moving along here, I’m going to expand a little bit on the last post I made.

In my previous post, I had said that I had some pretty cool things to talk about, so here is one of them:

Now, I can’t tell you too much, just enough to (hopefully) get you interested and invested in whats going on. So, for now, I’ll tell you these few points about the project:

  • It involves a stepper motor
  • Two limit switches
  • A 16 x 2 LCD screen
  • Two push buttons
  • One potentiometer

Thats about as much as I think I can tell you without giving away too much. I have mentioned this project in posts on other websites, so if you are reading this and you think you know what this is for, please don’t spoil it for everyone else. Also, if you do think you know what it is, you can email me if you want to ask about the project.

Vacation

Last night, my fiance and I returned home from a 5 day long vacation.

We visited family in Louisiana, where my soon-to-be sister-in-law graduated from College.

We flew into New Orleans (which is pronounced or-lins, not or-leans, damn it!), and we knew we made it to the dirty south when we went to go pick up our rental car.

My fiance had gone into the rental office to pick up our car, while I waited outside with our luggage and had a smoke. Not 10 seconds into being outside by myself, some gang-banger-thug-wannabe walked outside, stood right next to our luggage and started checking things out.

Having lived in Louisiana for 6 years, I’ve learned to pick up on subtle characteristics of those who are planning on doing no good, so don’t try to say I was being paranoid…

While this little shit was scoping out his potential pay-day free-for-all, I decided to toss my cigarette out, and let him know I wasn’t stupid. I sat down on the luggage and started opening and closing zippers as if I was looking for something, informing him that this was my/our shit, and he needs to take a step back.

Realizing I wasn’t an easy target, he waddled back inside.

A few minutes later, the fiance came back out w/ the keys to the car.

I asked him if he noticed the little bastard and what, if anything, he was doing inside.

Not a damn thing. Apparently, this young man was just standing around looking at every piece of luggage that came and went through the sliding doors.

Sad really.

On a not-so-frustrating note, I took TONS of pictures while visiting, most of which are portraits, that I need to do some post work to. Once those are done, I’ll put some of them on the intarwebz.

Electronics

As you may have noticed, one of my hobbies is photography.

Another hobby of mine is electronics.

Ever since I was young, I’ve had great pleasure in destroying things, specifically electronic devices, and trying to figure out how they work.

Until recently (3 years ago), I had no idea how to break out into the world of hobby electronics, or hacking, as it can be known. Then I heard about this wonderful thing called Arduino.

An open source, educational, prototyping platform designed, in my mind, for people who need a kick in the pants to get up and make stuff.

Anyway…

I’m working on a project based off of the Arduino, which I’ll be posting a lot about once I get rolling with it.

Like I said, I’m new to electronics and this is a learning experience, so bear with me.
