A rare Mid-week update

Last week, I attempted to mount a photograph to some foam board for a tutorial I was planning on publishing here at The Professional Dork; however, things didn’t go as planned, and I was left with a time lapse video of what amounts to me playing in my parents garage. The goal for last week was two fold: One, have a finished product that I could write a tutorial on, and two, have a time lapse video of the process so I could write a second tutorial on how I created the time lapse. Mounting the Lincoln Memorial

Posted in Blog with tags , , , , , , , , on February 10, 2013 by sethkoberg

Well, folks, in keeping with my “promise” of writing an entry every Sunday, here I am with what was supposed to be my first published tutorial on The Professional Dork.

This evening, I had tried to mount my “Lincoln Memorial” photograph onto some 1/4″ foam board I had purchased at a local hobby shop. Failing that, the only thing I have is a time lapse video of me not doing what I had attempted. Not a terrible loss, honestly, as I know now how not to mount a photograph to foam board. Sunday Night Catch-up.

Last post, I told you about this list of projects I’d like to finish by the end of this year. Here is an almost complete list of those projects, in random order:

  • Entertainment center
  • Shelving unit
  • Brick patio
  • Indoor Seed starter system
  • Green house/raised planter
  • Cajón
  • Pong-sat
  • Dice portrait
  • Juggling music video
  • Photo shoot

This list isn’t complete, but it is a start.

Another thing I need to work on is regularly updating this blog. I’m going to try and post an update at least once a week, on Sunday, updating what I’ve accomplished in the past week and what I plan on accomplishing in the up coming week.

Work to be done

Posted in Blog with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 30, 2013 by sethkoberg

Well, as it seems, I have a tendency to neglect my blog and post only once every few months; however, I am hoping to change that.

I have decided to christen 2013 as “the year of production.”

Being someone that makes a habit of inadvertently creating virtual lists of things I need or want, I am attempting to have this year be the year most, if not all, of those things gets finished. This list consists of projects that I have assigned to myself for the sole purpose of being able to say, “look at what I have made! Bask in all its glory!”

These projects range from wood working to electronics, gardening to photography, and almost every craft or hobby in between.

A lot of these projects could be finished simply by throwing money at them. For instance, one thing my husband and I need is a new entertainment center, but going out to the big box store and buying one would defeat the purpose of getting my hands dirty and actually creating something.

Like Nikola Tesla said, “I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success.”

Now, it is time for me to get to work.

Finally finishing, or, rather, mostly finishing a project, I figured it would be a good time as any to update my almost forgotten blog.

My firefly project, for my sisters wedding, has been completed as far as the technical portion goes.  All that is left is to put the board and dangling LED’s into a pretty container and dress it up to make it look good.

Getting this thing to work took a long time to figure out.  It goes without saying that I also got a lot of help online from the Adafruit forums.  Without the help from those kind people, I would have been dead in the water.

The wedding is this Saturday, and I will take some photos and some video of the finished product to post so I can show off my labor of love.

One other thing I’d like to add to the project is an LDR, or Light Dependent Resistor, more commonly known as a light detector, so the LED’s will begin flashing after the sun sets.  Once I get this put on and added to to the code, I think I’ll stuff the birds nest of wires into some paper lanterns and hang them up around town, guerrilla style.

Early Morning Rants

It is currently 1:30AM and I cannot sleep. I haven’t been able to sleep well for the past couple of days. I think it is because I have so many things running through my mind at once and it is not helping with my exhaustion. I’m hoping that writing something down will help alleviate the weight on my mind and let me get back to a more “normal” sleeping pattern.

One of the things that has been on my mind recently is my bottle cap mosaic piece that I mentioned in an earlier post and every day I get closer and closer to completing it. I have accumulated thousands of bottle caps with the help of So Addictive, a local bar and club. I’m currently in the process of organizing all the bottle caps by brand and type so I can go through and figure out which cap will go where in the final piece. It’s hard to believe that a few years ago I had this insane idea for this mosaic and now I’m getting ever so close to finishing it.

Another item on my list of “keep Seth awake subjects” is an anemometer I have put on hold for about a year or so. The issue I had run into the last time I worked on it was figuring out how to construct the rotating part which would catch the wind and allow me to measure the wind speed. When this project first started, that was supposed to be the “easy” part and the electronics/logic aspect would be the “difficult” part. Apparently I was wrong. The reason this has popped into my mind again is that I think I may have found a possible solution to the issue at hand. However, what I have found probably wont work 100% for what I need it to do, it has given me another option to look into and research for the final product. Once this part gets figured out I have another item on my list to cross off.

I’m finding that the closer I get to completing a project, more ideas and projects pop into my mind. To paraphrase Fat Bastard from Austin Powers, “It’s a vicious cycle.”

It’s late. I’m tired. I’m going to go smoke one last cigarette before I call it a night and try to get some sleep before the grind begins again tomorrow.

Wish me luck.

New Year, New Stuff.

Well, 2011 is over. It was a wild ride but it was well worth it.

As usual, its been a while since I’ve updated my blog but now I have a project in the works which has been on my mind for some time now. I’ve had this idea for a long time, at least two years, and I’m finally getting everything together to get it done.

The final product is going to be a mosaic, roughly 8′ x 4.5′, made out of beer bottle caps. The biggest hurdle I’ve faced up until now, aside from the obvious need for thousands of bottle caps, was an image to use as a basis for the image. Well, I’ve got an image now. I’ve had the image for a while, but up until recently, I haven’t thought of using for this project.

Using The GIMP and Inkscape, two open source and free graphics programs, I’ve taken the image and created a mock up of the final product.

I find it interesting that I’ll be using this image because of the subject matter and the medium being used. A young woman sitting on the side of the street, smoking, playing on her phone, made out of beer bottle caps.

Anyway, below is the mock up with a link to my flickr site where you can view a larger version.

The Paper

Recently, we had a representative from the Loudoun Lantern, which is the NVCC Loudoun campus news paper, visit us in class trying to recruit new members for the periodical. Since the class is an English class, most of the discussion was directed towards writers, but they were in need of photographers.

So, to make a long story short, I’m an official photographer for the Loudoun Lantern. How exciting!

I’ve got my first assignment, which is to photograph author Mischa Merz during her visit for the Fall For The Book festival here in the DC/Metro area.

First order of business: Let the organizer and Ms. Merz know that I’m a glutton for taking shots, and I will be constantly snapping photos during her reading.

Just a heads up.

In an attempt to keep things moving along here, I’m going to expand a little bit on the last post I made.

In my previous post, I had said that I had some pretty cool things to talk about, so here is one of them:

Now, I can’t tell you too much, just enough to (hopefully) get you interested and invested in whats going on. So, for now, I’ll tell you these few points about the project:

  • It involves a stepper motor
  • Two limit switches
  • A 16 x 2 LCD screen
  • Two push buttons
  • One potentiometer

Thats about as much as I think I can tell you without giving away too much. I have mentioned this project in posts on other websites, so if you are reading this and you think you know what this is for, please don’t spoil it for everyone else. Also, if you do think you know what it is, you can email me if you want to ask about the project.

Long time.

It’s been a while since I’ve updated my blog, even thought its been somewhere in the back of my mind, nagging me to update. So here I am, updating my blog…

Lets get a quick run-down as to whats happened since my last confession:

  • San Francisco was awesome!
  • I got married (YAY!)
  • The place I got fired from wanted me back, so I have a job again!
  • School started!

I think those are the four major events that have happened. Forgive me if I’m forgetting something.

That’s about it for this post. I just wanted to post SOMETHING so the blog didn’t end up here feeling neglected. Although, I have some (I think) pretty cool things to talk about in the days/weeks/months to come.

Stay tuned for what could end up being a pretty fun ride.
